What You May NOT Know About Mold

If your home experiences mold damage, reach out to SERVPRO of South Pasadena 24/7 to get the help you need to get your home back to normal.
No one wants to discover that their home has mold, but it can happen for several reasons. As a homeowner, it’s important to understand mold: what it is, what causes, and what to do should mold damage happen in your home.
Mold spores are already in your home
No matter how clean your home appears, it already has mold. As a matter of fact, microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors, so removing all mold spores from a home or business is impossible. It’s simply a matter of addressing it when excessive mold growth becomes an issue.
Mold isn’t an indication of a dirty home
Mold accumulation can often be caused or worsened by a failure to properly ventilate a residence after a storm, leaky appliance or pipe, or other water damage that wasn’t properly addressed. Mold can build up in stuffy bathrooms or any area where the environment is humid, warm, and poorly ventilated. It can grow behind walls and in attics where leaks go undetected. It can also grow in ceilings and walls from water floods or storm water. Mold isn’t an indication of a dirty home; it indicates that a situation is present that has allowed the already existing mold spores to grow significantly.
You shouldn’t clean up mold on your own.
The EPA’s recommendation to clean up a moldy area of up to 9 square feet is to wipe it with a cloth dampened with a diluted bleach solution. However, any type of mold damage more substantial than that should be addressed by a mold remediation professional like SERVPRO of South Pasadena. Not only can professionals address the mold damage but will work with the homeowners to determine what caused the mold growth in the first place and will work with them to address that situation to prevent potential mold damage in the future.
Insurance may not cover mold damage
Property insurance policies do not normally cover mold, fungus, or dry rot. If a water damage incident occurs, and the damage is not discovered and ventilated soon, mold can result. The property insurance will normally refuse to cover the cost of mold remediation but will still typically cover the rest of the repairs. Every homeowner’s policy is different and because mold growth is typically caused by another underlying issue, SERVPRO can help manage the insurance paperwork and process.
Demolition is a last resort for moldy walls and ceilings
When homeowners see mold growth on walls or ceilings, many feel the only option to get rid of the mold is to demo a large portion until it’s gone, but that’s usually not necessary! Mold remediation specialists know how to find the cause of mold growth, address and stop the growth, remove the mold, and reconstruct the damaged area, as well as address any lingering moldy odors. We follow a very specific mold remediation process that can restore a home back to normal without the need for demolition, except in more extreme cases.
Mold remediation doesn’t have to be costly
Because many believe the only option to get rid of mold is demolition, there is an unfounded belief that mold remediation is costly, but it doesn’t have to be, especially if it’s caught early and handled by professionals that know what to do. Containment, removal, and restoration can be done without breaking the bank! SERVPRO works with homeowners every step of the process, from finding the cause of the mold damage to restoration, working together to decide the best steps that are both effective and contain cost as much as possible.

Don't forget to look under your sinks!

Check under your sinks!
As we start coming into the cold rainy season here in Texas, moisture can start to build up in areas of your home that have water intrusion. Some examples of water intrusions are from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. If these issues do not get taken care of in a timely manner, they lead to mold growth. While it is normal for a small amount of mold spores to be present in most environments, once it starts spreading and multiplying, it can become a health risk. The mold typically latches onto organic materials in your home such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation. If your home has excessive humidity, a strong musty odor, or visible mold, call SERVPRO! Our Franchise has trained professionals in mold remediation who can safely restore your home to preloss condition.

What Is Black Mold?
10/15/2020 (Permalink)
Keep the humidity out, to avoid mold growth.
Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing. Any mold in your home should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.
How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?
Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact a qualified mold remediation company regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same house or structure. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, contact SERVPRO of South Pasadena immediately.
Understanding Mold
When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas. Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

10 Most common areas for mold growth in your home.
Mold is a living organism that belongs to the fungi family (like mushrooms, yeast, and even some cheeses like blue cheese).
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mold can grow on virtually any organic material as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that grow on wood, paper, carpet, food, and insulation. Because mold eats or digests what it is growing on, it can damage a building and its furnishings. If left unchecked, mold eventually can cause structural damage to building materials.

Do You Have a Mold Problem?
12/26/2018 (Permalink)
Mold can grow in 24-48 hours.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

How to Prevent Mold After Flooding
10/18/2018 (Permalink)
Mold experts say part of the problem is what many did right after the flood - or more importantly - what they didn't do.
As if dealing with a flooded home wasn’t enough, you then have to worry about the very real possibility of the unwelcome intruder that is mold (when it rains it pours and all that – quite literally in this case!). And with floods holding the accolade of leading natural disasters in America today – unavoidable, even, in many regions of the country – it’s something that may be closer than you think. So, what should you do if the unthinkable happens and you have to deal with a flooded property?
Other areas to monitor moisture to prevent mold growth: exterior walls and surfaces in need of insulation where condensation can build, air conditioner drip pans, check for leaks around the refrigerator, ensure crawl spaces are well ventilated and check for leaks around a tub.
These are a few simple tips for making sure mold is not growing in your home. If you do discover a mold growth, SERVPRO of South Pasadena provides mold remediation services for all types of residential and commercial properties.

Sporicide
10/17/2018 (Permalink)
Tip: Add a splash of bleach to water for an impromptu sporicide. CAUTION beach may stain or be hazardous to some delicate materials.
When most people find mold in their home the first instinct is to throw it out. The majority of the time, that is easy to do and a good decision. Then comes the day you find mold in someplace you can't exactly throw away such as on a wall. What now? Take a trip to Home Depot or Lowes and ask for something to help clean off mold and you will hear one word- Sporicide.
What Is Sporicide?
Sporicide is a chemical mixed together that is toxic to growing micro-organisms. In this case, it is used to kill young mold by quickly suffocating it and dissolving the roots. A more household name for sporicide is disinfectant.
It is advised to use a small amount of sporicide when performing household maintenance in moist areas of your home such as the bathroom. Its use will aid in preventing the growth of mold. When the mold is barely visible and beginning to take root, you can use a higher concentration to remove it safely from the wall. Remember to air out the room afterward.
SERVPRO Sporicide
All SERVPRO franchises have access to a unique selection of chemicals accessible only to the SERVPRO family. These disinfectants and cleaners are specially concocted by our team of a chemist in Tennessee. Their sole purpose, to make sure we are able to use only the best possible product for your home.

Houston Climate May Be A Breeding Ground For Mold

Mold Being Tested
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of South Pasadena to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

The Difference Between Mold and Mildew
7/23/2018 (Permalink)
It only takes 24-48 hours for mold and mildew to begin growing on wet surfaces.
Many people mistake mold for mildew which is very common. While both pose an obvious hazard to your health, mold is known to be the most dangerous. Both spread very easily, and their breeding ground is a moist environment. Yet despite being so similar, each needs to be removed in its own special way to prevent serious damage.
What's the Difference?
Mold is a fungus that grows in black or green patches that sink into every nook and crevasse of the affected wet area. Removing mold typically involves cutting well around the affected area and safely removed. Mildew is best explained as a type of mild mold. It grows to be flat against the surface without penetrating the structure and can be easily scraped off if caught early. Just as it would with fruit that has been sitting out too long. You can also occasionally find mildew on other organic materials such as paper, damp drywall, and fabrics.
The Visual Contrast
Mildew:
- Typically, gray or white (but will turn black or brown over time)
- Powdery or fluffy appearance
- Grows in flat, circular shape
- Likes to grow on moist areas
Mold:
- Typically, black or green but can range to nearly any color
- Fuzzy or slimy appearance
- Irregularly shaped
- Will cause the material beneath it to rot
- Usually puts off a musty smell
Preventive Measures for Mold and Mildew
- Fix plumbing issues/leaks as soon as possible
- Clean the fabrics in your home periodically
- Store items in a dry area
- Use a dehumidifier, open a window, or turn on a fan to keep moisture to a minimum
- Wash your bath mats
If you happen to find an affected area, give us a call at 281-412-6211.
The Price of Mold in Texas
7/13/2018 (Permalink)
No certification is needed to remove under 25 sq/ft of mold.
Undeniably one of the scariest things to find in your home is mold. The color green is not just associated with it for its appearance. Most insurance policies will not cover the cost of mold remediation and when it comes down to it the price tag can soar sky high. According to Home Advisor "The national average cost for mold remediation is $2,239, with a typical range between $1,115 and $3,362."
The reason for this hefty cost has to do with how difficult it is to become certified in mold remediation. Meaning not just anyone can do it and those that can jump through hoops to comply with all EPA regulations as well as state law. For the state of Texas, this makes it a real challenge.
A Licensed Remediation Contractor must follow a Mold Remediation Protocol on every Mold Remediation job, no matter how big or how small. Only a Texas Licensed Mold Assessment Consultant can write a Mold Remediation Protocol. This requires time and communication between the two and has been know to last anywhere from a couple days to few weeks.
As inconvenient as all this may seem, every obstacle put in place is there for the protection of the residents and the remediators. If not done correctly you could be left back at square one. In the end all the hassle is worth it, leaving you with a worry free and clean environment.
